WES Hybrid System

WES Hybrid on a small island near Bali, Indonesia

A large share of the world's electricity is produced by diesel generators.  Diesel generators are found in those places where grid connections are either not available or where the grid is too unstable and they serve as back-up generators.  For many years the wind energy industry has neglected this huge potential market, mostly because wind turbines are not suitable for a connection to a diesel generator.

WES came up with the perfect solution; a unique patented Hybrid Wind/Diesel wind turbine that guarantees a stable and economic power generation.

100% Wind Penetration

Due to the combination of the WES rotor technology, the a-synchronous variable speed generator and the state-of-the-art control cabinet, a Wind Penetration of 100% can be achieved.  This is unique as a maximum wind penetration of 30% is the norm for other so-called hybrid systems.

No other equipment necessary!

The WES18 and WES30 Hybrid have a nominal output of 80 and 250 kW.  They can be connected to one or more diesel generators with an equal or larger capacity.  The diesel generators form the "grid" (400Volt 50/60 Hz, 3 phase) and they will act as a back-up when there is insufficient wind to produce the needed energy.  The make or model of the diesel generator is not important, as long as they have a PLC control. The wind turbine can even power the diesel generator when there is sufficient wind, thus maximizing your diesel fuel savings.

Typical Set-up

The following images show a WES30 Hybrid connected to a "diesel-island-grid".

Situation 1:

bulletnominal output of the WES30 Hybrid is 250 kW
bulletMaximum capacity of the diesel generator is 250 kW
bulletpeak demand of the grid/consumer is less than 250 kW
bulletWind speed at the moment is 6.5 m/s
bulletMaximum wind energy potential is 40 kW
bulletWind turbine output is 40 kW
bulletEnergy demand of the grid is 200 kW
bulletDiesel generator output is 160 kW

Situation 2:

bulletnominal output of the WES30 Hybrid is 250 kW
bulletMaximum capacity of the diesel generator is 250 kW
bulletpeak demand of the grid/consumer is less than 250 kW
bulletWind speed at the moment is 12.5 m/s
bulletMaximum wind energy potential is 250 kW
bulletWind turbine output is 235 kW
bulletEnergy demand of the grid is 200 kW
bulletDiesel generator output is 0 kW
bulletWES Hybrid software regulates output of the wind turbine to match the demand
